2012 Chevrolet Suburban

The
2012 Chevrolet Suburban ranks 1 out of 8 Affordable Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 54 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Suburban, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
For shoppers who need its brawny towing abilities, cavernous interior and chart-topping passenger capacity, the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban is a good choice.
Reviewers acknowledge that most people who shop for a Chevy Suburban could get by just fine with an all-wheel drive crossover or minivan. But if you have your heart set on a big SUV with real four-wheel drive, lots of towing ability and seating for the whole baseball team, test drivers say the Chevrolet Suburban is a good choice.
Its base V8 engine might not be quite as muscular as the larger eight-cylinder engine found in three-quarter ton models, but the Suburban gets better fuel economy than most, and reviewers say it has plenty of power for most drivers. They also love its comfortable ride and say that it is easy to drive, which makes this behemoth feel a bit more manageable. Additionally, the Suburban’s well-equipped interior wins praise for its high-quality feel.
But the Suburban has some significant drawbacks. The optional larger V8 engine, though more powerful, comes with a major drop in fuel economy, so reviewers only recommend it for buyers who need to tow or haul big loads. Its heavy third row of seats must be removed and stored elsewhere in order to maximize cargo space, and this process seems like even more of a pain when you consider that most of the Suburban’s competitors have third rows that fold down into the floor. Finally, its third row is barely big enough for teenagers, so if you plan to chauffer adults in those seats, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Top Pickup for 2012

Four Wheeler magazine named the Ram Power Wagon its 2012 Pickup Truck of the Year, and it's an award that celebrates features we associate with so-called "serious" pickups, like a two-speed transfer case, trail performance and vinyl flooring. But what if you want a Pickup Truck of the Year that's got a little less pickup in it? Consumer Reports holds your answer, as it chose the Chevrolet Avalanche as the 2012 Top Pick Pickup Truck.
Why? Because of, as far as we can tell, its versatility and the ways it feels more like a Chevrolet Suburban than a Power Wagon: interior, fire-and-forget four-wheel drive, decent acceleration and comfy ride. Or, put another way, because even though it's not a Chevrolet Suburban it can do almost everything a Suburban can do as well as hold a kayak. But you can't see out the back, because there's a bed there.

2011 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 Review

2011 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 Review. High gas prices are the talk of the day, leading many car buyers to focus on smaller, more efficient models.  For some people, however, bigger isn't necessarily better, but it is necessary. Especially well-suited for large families and those who tow a camper, boat or horse trailer, the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban is a completely modernized version of a genuine workhorse. It's available in light-duty 1500 and heavy-duty, three-quarter-ton 2500 guises and three trim levels: the base LS, the mid-level LT and the upscale LTZ. Inside its cavernous confines is seating for up to nine occupants, cargo space that maxes out at 137.4 cubic feet, and all of the available luxuries and amenities required by families, contractors, and others. When it comes to vehicles you can buy off your local dealer's lot, there's not much capable of casting a shadow over the 2011 Chevrolet Suburban. It's a full-size SUV, indeed. Modern styling shared with the Chevy Tahoe and Avalanche models allows the body-on-frame rig to appear big, yet refined at the same time. That's due in part to restrained hood and fender bulges as well as precision body gaps that were introduced with the Suburban's last redesign. The whole package rolls on 17-inch Chevrolet wheels, which can be replaced by new-for-2011, dealer-installed, chrome 20-inchers.

2011 Chevrolet Suburban News

The 2011 Chevrolet Suburban is one of the largest and longest sport-utility vehicles on the market, along with the closely related GMC Yukon XL and Cadillac Escalade ESV. The Suburban is about 20 inches longer than the Tahoe, with most of that added length (14 inches) going to wheelbase. Overall, Suburban gets a larger third-row seat and more cargo space with the third row up—plus larger rear doors that allow easier access to the third row. For those who need to haul the heaviest loads and don't mind a less cushy ride, there's the Chevrolet Suburban 2500, which comes with heavy-duty suspension and drive systems, but the Suburban 1500 should suit all personal uses—including rather regular towing and hauling needs. All Suburban 1500s come with a 320-horsepower, 5.3-liter V-8, and they team the power to standard rear-drive or optional four-wheel drive through a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is flex-fuel capable and comes with cylinder deactivation, which turns off cylinders when full power isn't needed. With the six-speed auto, it's powerful and smooth, and can deliver fuel economy as high as an estimated 15/21 mpg. Tow ratings range up to 8,100 pounds.
The Suburban maintains control over the road quite well for its size, though its sheer size and mass can get in the way of maneuverability. Ride quality is more sophisticated and smooth than its truck appearance suggests, and inside it's nearly the size of a Japanese hotel room, with 137.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind the first row of seats.

2011 Chevrolet Suburban

The 2011 Chevrolet Suburban ranks 2 out of 8 Affordable Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 51 published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Suburban, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The Chevrolet Suburban is one of the longest-running nameplates in the automotive market, and with good reason. The Suburban combines a large and comfortable interior with excellent towing abilities.
Edmunds calls the Suburban "a compelling choice for those who need a traditional full-size SUV with massive passenger, cargo and towing capacities. We just wonder how many people really do." That's the question prospective Suburban buyers need to answer: Do they really need a Suburban? Though it has space for up to nine people, lots of room for cargo and the ability to tow heavy loads, the Suburban is also a large, thirsty SUV. While the Suburban is a great choice for large families who routinely tow a boat or horse trailer, it may not make sense for buyers who are just looking for something for carpool duty.
If you're looking to make your model a "home away from home" CARiD.com has the Chevy Suburban Accessories and parts that will guide you along.

Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevrolet Suburban full-size SUV is available in three well-equipped trim levels: base LS, well-equipped LT and luxurious LTZ. All are powered by V8s. Standard on the half-ton Suburban 1500 is a 5.3-liter unit making 310 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque, equipped with GM's fuel-conserving cylinder-deactivation technology. Optional on the 1500 is a 6.0-liter V8 packing 366 horses and 376 lb-ft; the Suburban 2500 comes standard with a different variant that is tuned for even more torque and thus makes 352 hp and 382 lb-ft. All are matched to a smooth and cooperative six-speed automatic transmission. A choice of two- or four-wheel drive is yours either way, and towing capacities can approach 10,000 pounds.
For such a big truck, the Chevrolet Suburban is relatively quick when unloaded and can reach 60 mph in under 9 seconds. However, the base V8 Suburban doesn't always feel so quick when carrying a load of power- and fuel-sapping stuff. The suspension system is impressive, though -- coil-over shocks up front and a five-link setup out back, plus precise rack-and-pinion steering -- that all make for more composed handling and a smooth ride. It's still not exactly nimble around corners, but the cabin is quiet at speed and the ride is always comfortably controlled. When pointed straight down an interstate or out in the wide-open spaces, there aren't many better, more capable cruisers than the
Chevrolet Suburban. Overall, it's a compelling and top-rated choice for shoppers with lots of people- or gear-hauling needs.
