General Motors has recalled 2012 models of the Chevrolet Suburban and Express, as well as the 2012 GMC Yukon and Savana.
According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the steering gear Pitman shaft in those vehicles may not have been properly hardened. If that's the case, the shaft could fracture under certain conditions. Since the Pitman shaft is a key element in the steering system, a fracture could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The NHTSA bulletin doesn't offer specifics about manufacture dates that might be included (or excluded) on this particular recall. So, for the time being, we have to assume that all 2012 models are eligible. All told, 6,159 vehicles are affected by the recall.
